How much counter space in kitchen

Counter space is an integral part of any kitchen and plays an important role in a kitchen's overall functionality. When you're cooking, prepping, and cleaning, you need enough counter space to be able to work efficiently. Having plenty of surface area also allows you to spread out ingredients, tools, utensils, and more for easier access.

Kitchens come in a variety of sizes and layouts, so it can be difficult to know exactly how much counter space is enough. There are some general guidelines that can help guide your decision making when planning a kitchen remodel or deciding on a suitable appliance or furniture layout.

A typical kitchen should have at least 25 square feet of counter space if it is small enough to fit only one person at a time. Also consider the size of the appliances used in the kitchen; larger stoves and ovens will require more countertop area than smaller ones. If there are two people regularly cooking in the kitchen at once, then double this requirement to 50 square feet or more. An island also provides additional countertop workspace perfect for food preparation tasks or entertaining family and friends while food cooks.

Depending on usage habits, other items such as mixers and blenders might also motivate adding more countertop area such as extra worktops on either side of the main kitchen island countertop (or both). Other items like microwaves should also be considered — often it's best for them to fit onto the counter so there's easy access when needed without taking up valuable shelf space elsewhere.
